Marhan set for senior team call-up
By AFTAR SINGH
KUALA LUMPUR: Junior World Cup trainee Mohd Marhan Mohd Jalil has made tremendous progress since joining the team a year ago. And he is now knocking on the door of the national senior training squad.
National junior coach K. Rajan said that the Negri Sembilan midfielder gave impressive performances in two friendly matches against the national senior team last week.
“Marhan was the only player in the 21-member national junior training squad who caught the eyes of the national senior coaches,’’ he said.
“He is a good attacking midfield player with the ability to score field goals. At the rate he is going, I am confident that he will get a call-up after the Junior World Cup to join the national senior team.”
Malaysia will co-host the Junior World Cup Finals with Singapore from June 7-21.
Marhan, who is doing a pre-university course at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), said that he was delighted to learn that he could expect to get a senior team call-up.
“My childhood dream is to play for the national team. And this is definitely a big boost to my confidence to give my best in the Junior World Cup,” said the former student of Tengku Besar Secondary School in Tampin.
“I only joined the national junior training squad a year ago and I am glad that I have made good progress.”
Marhan, however, said that Malaysia would face a daunting task of achieve the target set by the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) to finish among the top four in the Junior World Cup Finals.
“We are ranked at No. 10 in the Finals and it’s going to be a great challenge for us to reach the semi-finals,” he said.
